The Tradition

What is
Santhiya?

Santhiya is the traditional and classical method of learning Gurbani — the sacred scriptures of the Sikh faith — through direct instruction from a knowledgeable teacher.

It encompasses the correct pronunciation of each word, the proper placement of pauses (viram), an understanding of grammatical structures (vyakaran), the traditional melody and cadence of reading, and the deeper meaning underlying the sacred text.

Santhiya has been preserved and transmitted across generations of Sikh scholars and is considered essential for those who wish to read and recite Gurbani with accuracy and devotion.
